Internship Opportunity at First Fruits Produce in Mahomet, Illinois

We are hoping to find someone that has the interest of the environment and nutritious food at heart.

To all who would like to have a back to basics farm experience:

We at First Fruits Produce have a beautiful 50-acre farm just north of Mahomet. If you are interested in spending a summer internship with us on our farm, be prepared for an intensive involvement with your produce from seed to table! Our greenhouses hold thousands of plants, offering a learning environment for planting, transplanting, fertilizing and plant care through various stages of development. From greenhouse to field is another opportunity to learn about different planting techniques, as well as companion plantings. Once in the fields, there is still much to learn and do with irrigation and the battles against pests and weeds! Our farm offers a fantastic, practical, hands-on experience and you will come away with a much greater appreciation for produce grown as naturally as possible. Be prepared for the hard work that a sustainable farm requires and you will relish the rewards of your labors. We all get our hands dirty as we improve the soil and pour our hearts into keeping the environment clean. Our farm has now expanded to include laying chickens and meat chickens. With that comes the educational experience in caring for and managing the free-range, antibiotic and hormone-free poultry. We also participate in farmer’s markets, and the effort to educate consumers about the need for naturally grown produce is very important to us, so we spend time at our markets doing just that. We look forward to working with you and sharing our wonderful farm experience with you this summer! Those who would like to participate will need to provide their own lodging and transportation to the farm, as there is no onsite lodging.

Anyone interested can contact Burt & Nancy Asbill at 217.586.1333 or 217.778.7305 for more details.
