Benefits of Red Clover for Field Crop Production

American agriculture uses natural gas most significantly for the production of fertilizers’ primary component, nitrogen. This represents about 80 percent of the cost of fertilizer. Research is showing the benefits of using legume cover crops in field crop production to restore nitrogen. How far can one cut input costs, especially of nitrogen? Adam Davis, USDA Invasive Weed Management Research Ecologist, will be the guest speaker at a workshop and field day program. Data will be presented to illustrate contribution of red clover to nitrogen requirements in corn, growth suppression effect on weeds and effects on weed seed predators. Brad Weber and Lloyd Bohl, two area wheat farmers, will also share their experiences with frost seeding red clover into wheat at different planting dates and seeding rates. Following the presentations, the group will travel to Brad’s wheat field to view the demonstration plots and the impact of red clover in his wheat field. The seminar is free, but a $5 donation to the Ag Program at University of Illinois Extension, Kankakee County is suggested to help defray the costs of this event.
