Up one levelAquaponics/Greenhouse Tour
With the cold Midwest winters, an aquaculture system combined with a hydroponic greenhouse system can provide year-round fish, herbs and fresh vegetables. The Center for Sustainable Community presents this tour of AquaRanch in Flanagan, IL which offers a first-hand look at one of the most successful greenhouse/aquaculture systems in the state. Not only does AquaRanch begin the process in their own fish hatchery, but they even have a line of salad dressings made with their organically produced basil. Presented by: Myles Harston of AquaRanch Cost is $35. The Center for Sustainable Community is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational organization offering seminars and workshops in holistic health, renewable energy, green building, and sustainable agriculture.

The Dudley Smith Initiative
Dudley Smith Researchers at the Dudley Smith Farm in Christian County are investigating extended pasture rotations with beef cattle integrated into conservation-based row crop production. Cattle graze three types of pasture during the growing season. The goal of this system is to produce forage for cattle year round without reliance on external feed sources. Cash crops provide additional income.
