Discussion of a waste dump and associated health concerns in Champaigh
Announcement: SECS will be having a special meeting at the YMCA this week during our regular general meeting time. See the invitation below from our social officer, Robin.
Hello,
My name is Robin, and I'm an active member in Students for
Environmental Concerns. I want to invite you and your respective
groups to come out to SECS's meeting this coming Wednesday, November
28th at 6:30 pm in the YMCA. Chuck Allen, is a graduate student here
at the university in Urban Planning, and he and his classmate have
come across a toxic waste site in Champaign. They will be presenting
to their advisory board soon, and have tried to contact and work with
both Amerin and the Champaign council members, who have all ignored or
threatened them. They have been working with community members to
gather information about the site's longevity and to try and figure
out the heath risks in the area.
There have been several documented cases of rare cancers within a 2
block radius, as well as other illnesses resulting from poisoning.
There is also evidence that the toxins have moved almost 20 feet in
the past decade, and now are residing under people's homes. Some
testimonies from people who have lived there their whole lives state
that they have never found living animals, only carcasses, on the
contaminated property, and the grass will not grow there.
The city plans on making this site into a shopping strip with a dollar
store and a grocery store. Amerin refuses to listen to their
inquiries. Chuck and his classmate have documented evidence of a
similar case, which is still under cleanup in Oak Park, IL. This site
will soon affect all of Champaign county if something is not done, as
the poisons are seeping closer to the water table.
