Alternative Swine Producer Support & Technical Services Manager

A full-time manager is needed to provide technical support to small, independent farmers raising hogs on pasture participating in NC Choices marketing initiatives and to implement professional training workshops on pasture-based hog production.

 NC Choices (<http://www.ncchoices.com/>www.ncchoices.com) is a project of The Center for Environmental Farming System (CEFS, <http://www.cefs.ncsu.edu/>www.cefs.ncsu.edu) whose mission is to facilitate production and market expansion of alternatively-raised pork in North Carolina.  Position includes: 1) implementing regular farm site visits and conducting farmer needs assessments, 2) coordinating the involvement of resource specialists in the provision of technical services to farmers in all areas of small-scale production, processing and marketing, including related to soil conservation and water quality protection issues and concerns 3) developing and facilitating a series of comprehensive training sessions for farmers and extension agents covering all aspects of pasture-based hog production, processing and marketing, 4) coordinating on-farm demonstration projects in three regions of the state pertaining to conservation practices in outdoor hog production, 5) creating technical training and farmer education materials as needed, including a comprehensive series of extension bulletins, a newsletter, and outreach materials pertaining to conservation practices, and 6) participating in the development of conservation standards for pasture-raised pigs.  Further responsibilities will include grant writing and reporting.  Manager will be part of a multi-institutional and multidisciplinary team working to develop infrastructure support and technical training to independent swine producers.  Manager will report specifically to NC Choices Project Director, Jennifer Curtis and will work closely with Dr. Nancy Creamer and Dr. Todd See.    
 
SALARY: Full-time position includes benefits; salary commensurate with experience.
 
QUALIFICATIONS: B.S. with 1-3 years experience required.  Degree(s) should be in animal science or related fields. Candidates should have familiarity with alternative swine production systems and natural resource conservation issues and practices, or have relevant background and be able to quickly learn these areas.  Experience with hoop houses, pasture-based swine production, and/or antibiotic-free, sustainable, and organic pork production is highly desirable. The successful candidate will have demonstrated ability to work with a broad array of collaborators including farmers, scientists, and extension personnel, experience organizing and executing educational programming.  A technical writing sample will be required for application.
