Field Organizer National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture

The part time position of field organizer would provide support throughout our issue committee work for the Farm Bill, as well as for our overarching Policy Advisory Committee, which was created to ensure the committees are working in synergy with each other. The new organizer would reach out to expand the breadth and depth of committee participation by contacting new members where needed, enlisting sign-ons to letters, provide support in circulating information to our Action Alert list, and other support tasks.

Founded in 1994, the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture (NCSA) is an alliance of hundreds of grassroots, state, regional and national partner organizations, representing constituencies that include family and minority farms, farm workers, rural and urban communities, labor, environmental and wildlife advocates, workers, students, indigenous peoples, consumers, faith-based institutions, social justice advocates and others.  With administrative offices in Pine Bush, New York and Portland, Maine the National Campaign is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to encourage public policy development that results in a food and agricultural system that is healthy, humane, profitable and just for all.

The National Campaign's principal priority over the next three to five years is to strengthen its network and action alert base, which will further its impact on public policy and result in on-the- ground changes that lead to a more sustainable food and agriculture system. The NCSA has five issue committees working to develop grassroots policy initiatives in the areas of: organic, sustainable livestock, stewardship, competition and concentration, and renewables.


Ideal candidates for this position will:
Be a champion for the National Campaign's mission.
Possess a clear communication style and be able to work with multiple constituencies.·      
Be familiar with Farm Bill legislation and the sustainable agriculture movement.
·       Have experience in grass-roots and internet organizing.
·       Be computer literate with experience with Microsoft Office and have a connection to high speed internet access.
·       Experience with data base manipulation and web site maintenance
·       Possess excellent time management skills
Possess an undergraduate degree in a relevant field or equivalent experience
.
Key Responsibilities:
Given the limited hours being offered the work will be informed by closely working with the NCSA’s Policy Advisory Committee Consultant, and our Administrative Director to: 
Provide administrative and organizing support and to assemble and distribute information
Help to organize participation at regional and national meetings   
The contract period is from January 1, 2008 through December 31, 2008 and is being offered at 12 hours per week.
