eOrganic Well Received at MOSES

by Deborah Cavanaugh Grant last modified April 12, 2009 11:05 AM

eOrganic staffed an exhibit space at the midwest's 20th annual Organic Conference with over 150 other companies and organizations. A steady stream of Conference attendees visited the booth and learned about eXtension and eOrganic. Optimism was expressed at the realization that the Land Grant universities and Extension were investing significant time and effort in developing resources useful and readily available to organic growers.

About eOrganic

This new resource is designed for farmers, ranchers, agricultural professionals, certifiers, researchers and educators seeking science-, regulatory-, and experience-based information. The eOrganic site features:

* Frequently Asked Questions: Organic agriculture experts from throughout the nation provide simple, clear answers on topics such as crop production, pest management, nutrient use, soil amendments and organic certification.

* News and Upcoming Events: Organic agriculture continues to gain prominence in the news. eXtension and eOrganic bring together news from land-grant universities. National, statewide and local organic events are listed.

* Ask an Expert: Experts nationwide respond to individual organic agriculture questions within 24 hours of submission.

* Video Clips: More than 100 video clips explain organic agriculture practices.

* Articles and Lessons: Learn about organic agriculture, successful varieties, production system practices, and government rules and regulations from more than 150 articles.

Extension organic agriculture specialists from across the nation compiled the content that goes through a review process before it is published to eXtension.org. Experts from Clemson University, Cornell University, Ohio State University, Oregon State University, Penn State University, University of Florida, University of Illinois, University of Minnesota, and University of Vermont worked on the new site. Farmers, personnel from organic certification agencies, organic agricultural consultants, and staff from USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education and Extension Service (CSREES) also contributed.

The eOrganic site joins other eXtension (pronounced E-extension) sites including information on the financial crisis; animal manure management; beef cattle; corn and soybean production; cotton production; dairy cattle; disasters; diversity across higher education; entrepreneurs and their communities; family caregiving; geospatial technology; horses; horticulture; imported fire ants; parenting; personal finance; science, engineering and technology for youth; and wildlife damage management.

eXtension is an educational partnership of more than 70 land grant universities helping Americans improve their lives with access to timely, objective, research-based information and educational opportunities. http://www.extension.org, is customized with links to local Cooperative Extension Web sites.

On the collaborative workspace for eOrganic (www.eorganic.info), Extension personnel, researchers, organic producers and nonprofit partners from across the country develop research-based information on a broad and expanding range of topic areas associated with organic farming, marketing and certification, and to plan and manage research and outreach projects. If you have experience and expertise in some aspect of organic agriculture then consider joining the eOrganic Web community. As an eOrganic member, you can create a personal page; form/join one or more groups; work on personal and group projects and develop eXtension content. Apply for membership by sending an email to joineOrganic@gmail.com.

The 20th Organic Farming Conference, February 26-28 in La Crosse, Wisconsin, sponsored by the Midwest Organic and Sustainable Education Service (MOSES), provided a special opportunity for eOrganic to reach over 2,600 people keenly interested in organic food, farming, and marketing. Now the largest organic meeting of its kind in the country, the Conference is a hotbed of organic information and networking and the perfect venue for promoting the newly launched eOrganic.
