Ensuring Data Availability for Cornell University's Upper Susquehanna Agricultural Ecology Program

The Upper Susquehanna Agricultural Ecology Program (AEP) at Cornell University aims to improve the understanding of the sources and movement of nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment in the upper Susquehanna River basin (and ultimately the Chesapeake Bay), with the goal of informing management practices to help maintain environmental quality and agricultural productivity in rural landscapes in the northeastern United States.  Collaborative, interdisciplinary research efforts such as this one result in the creation of a variety of data sets with potential value to other researchers, resource managers, and the public, and AEP researchers recognize that providing access to their data is essential to deriving the full benefits of their research efforts.  Toward that end, Albert R. Mann Library is collaborating with the research group to facilitate the sharing and archiving of research data, both among the researchers and for use by the public.  The collaboration has four key components: (1) helping to create high quality, discipline-specific documentation (metadata) for data sets produced by the group by providing training and individual assistance to researchers, (2) depositing data sets and documentation in one or more online repositories, (3) creating an ontology-based web portal that presents information about the program and links to data sets regardless of their location, and (4) providing tools to facilitate collaboration among researchers within the program.  As a test case, the historic data sets are being formatted and documented for deposit in Cornell’s institutional repository, as well as the Knowledge Network for Biocomplexity.
