Urban farmer receives MacArthur ‘genius grant’
Will Allen, founder of Milwaukee's urban farm organization Growing Power, was just awarded $500,000 from the MacArthur Foundation.

"Will Allen, a former professional basketball player turned urban farmer, was awarded a $500,000 “genius grant” today by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
Allen, 59, is believed to be the first recipient of the award from the Milwaukee area.
He is the co-founder and chief executive officer of Growing Power, 5500 W. Silver Spring Drive in Milwaukee.

This year’s MacArthur fellowships tilted heavily toward science and medicine but also include a violin virtuoso, a music critic and an architectural historian who studies ancient bridges.
