DESCRIPTION: This one year position, with opportunity for renewal,
offers work with the CEFS team in developing and executing an
implementation plan for a State Action Plan being developed titled:
"Building a Local Food Economy in North Carolina." The initiative has
involved a series of regional meetings and Working Issues Teams, and
will also include a statewide summit (May 2009) that will culminate in
the State Action Plan. The initiative includes a wide range of
stakeholders and partners, and more information can be found at

The successful candidate will work with the CEFS core team in
facilitating follow-up on a regional and statewide basis as needed and
prescribed in the action plan. Job responsibilities will include
policy and programmatic research and development, facilitation of
working groups and ongoing committees in their process and planning
efforts to initiate collaborative projects at the regional
level or
around specific issues statewide, and staffing an ongoing committee to
facilitate moving forward key aspects of the work. Job
responsibilities will also include partnership building among diverse
groups, communicating with a wide range of stakeholders, preparing
detailed communication materials and detailed policy briefings, grant
writing, report writing, meeting coordination, public speaking, and
more. Candidate must be able to hit the ground running, so familiarity
with the issues and stakeholders are key. Extension Associate will
work under the guidance of Dr. Nancy Creamer, Extension Specialist and
Director of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems.
QUALIFICATIONS: Master's Degree in agriculture, public health, county
and regional planning, public administration, or some related field
and/or experience that is at the intersection of sustainable food
systems and local food economies; strong and demonstrated interest and
experience in sustainable local food systems; excellent oral and written
communication skills and the ability to positively interact with a wide
variety of types of groups; public speaking experience and comfort with
doing so are a must. Excellent computer skills, including database
management, PowerPoint, word processing, and internet applications. Good
organization and time management skills will be important. Experience
with meeting facilitation is a plus as are Spanish speaking and writing
skills.
