Organization History

From an institutional perspective sustainable agriculture activities at the UIUC College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences extend back over a century ago. Many researchers over the years have studied sustainable use of land and water resources, as well as social dimensions of agricultural production. The current ASAP program began in 1988, with the formation of an Ad Hoc Committee on Sustainable Agriculture and the naming of Harvey J. Schweitzer as coordinator for sustainable agriculture. Since then, ASAP has coordinated a variety of activities in partnership with farmers, professors, Extension, and other individuals and organizations interested in sustainable agriculture. Activities have included participatory on-farm research, conferences and workshops, field days, and newsletters. Read more recent history of ASAP.
